Blend: an AI product photo tool for online sellers at $1.2M a year

Blend sells AI-generated product photos, model shots, lifestyle images, videos and brand assets to e-commerce sellers, and was at $1.2M a year in revenue as its founders reported in a September 2023 interview (Starter Story).

How it started

Vaibhav Prakash, Jamsheed Kamardeen and Vishwanath Kollapudi started Blend in March 2021, based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Vaibhav was working on some API projects when he thought an app for e-commerce sellers would be worth building, and he called Vishwanath; Vishwanath brought in Jamsheed, who had started coding as a child and had been the first engineer and later VP of Engineering at Locus. The three sat on the idea for about a day, chose product photography as their wedge, and shipped a first version a month later with no upfront investment.

The problem they were aiming at was cost. In the interview the founders describe D2C businesses struggling with photography and say that 9 out of 10 businesses fail to succeed due to high costs and strong competition — their own framing, not a measured market figure. Upload a photo of the item, and the app removes the background, picks a backdrop and can add copy and call-to-actions.

What it sells and how it charges

From the official site blendnow.com, as fetched on 2026-09-30: Blend AI creates product photos, AI model shots, lifestyle images, videos and brand assets, with no studio required. The tools listed on the homepage include background removal, Studio Shot, Ghost Mannequin, Lifestyle Shot, AI Models, AI Backgrounds, AI Video, Poster Maker, Logo Maker, Product Recolor, Change Pose, Text Behind Image and Add Dimensions.

The site names its buyers by segment: fashion and apparel sellers, Amazon and Etsy sellers, D2C and Shopify brands, beauty and skincare brands, home and furniture sellers, and high-volume catalogue teams that run batch processing. It says output can be made marketplace-ready, meeting Amazon's white background requirements and Etsy's image guidelines, and that batch processing covers studio shot creation and marketplace formatting across a whole catalogue.

The homepage also displays the company's own counters: 10M+ images created, 3.5M sellers, a 90% reduction in photo costs and a 4.8★ app store rating. Those are Blend's figures, not independently verified ones.

Pricing comes from the site's pricing page. There is a free starting option and two paid tiers, available on monthly or yearly billing:

PRO MAX
Price $19.99 / month $49.99 / month
Credits 1000 a month 3x PRO
AI background 2000 3x PRO
AI Model, Lifestyle Shots, Studio Shot, Ghost Mannequin 100 each 3x PRO each
AI Videos 100 seconds; max duration 10s 3x PRO; max duration 30s
Exports HD exports HD exports

PRO is described as access to all features with 1000+ templates. MAX adds advanced features such as uploading your own photo to create a custom AI model or AI influencer, longer AI videos, and the ability to buy more credits at a cheaper rate.

How it got its first customers, and what kept growth going

Word of mouth carried the early base. In the founder's words: "many of our users share the app in their communities and we acquire a large part of our user base with word of mouth."

The founders list six acquisition channels in the interview:

  • Organic: users sharing the app inside their own seller communities.
  • Influencer marketing: collaborations with relevant influencers who create and distribute content about Blend.
  • SEO: the Blend Seller Academy blog on blendnow.com, published in multiple languages and written to answer questions e-commerce sellers and content creators search for.
  • Ads: performance campaigns on Facebook, TikTok and Google.
  • Social media: Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok under @blendnow.
  • Referral: a program that gives a user 10 watermark-free exports when a friend signs up through their referral link.

On retention, the founders point to frequency rather than campaigns: design and product photography is a very frequent use case for an online seller, so the product sits inside a workflow that repeats. They also describe user focus and empathy for the seller's problem as the thing that keeps the company growing, and say they learned to stay attached to the problem rather than to any single solution.

All of this is founder-reported as of the September 2023 interview; the interview does not state later figures.

The numbers

  • Revenue: $1.2M a year, reported by the founders in the September 2023 interview (interview dated 2023-09-24). This is not current revenue, and no later figure is given.
  • Team at the time: 3 founders and 28 employees.
  • Started: March 2021, in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
  • Start cost: no upfront investment — the founders say the first version was built without one.

How it compares

The comparison figures below come from 1M.chat's analysis of 1,997 businesses with founder-reported revenue in Starter Story interviews (2015–2026). It is a self-selected sample of founders who chose to be interviewed, not a random sample of all businesses.

In the same category, AI tools & apps, that analysis covers 84 businesses with founder-reported revenue:

  • Median monthly revenue: $16.5K.
  • Share at $1M a year or more: 26%.
  • Median employees: 2.
  • Share started by one founder: 42%.
  • Top growth channels among the 40 businesses in the category with channel information: organic social media 60%, SEO and organic search 60%, partnerships and affiliates 35%, launch platforms such as Product Hunt, AppSumo and marketplaces 32%.

Against that baseline, Blend's reported revenue is about 6 times the category median, and its 28 employees sit above the category median of 2. Its channel mix overlaps the two most common ones in the category — organic social and SEO — while paid performance ads and influencer marketing do not appear in that top-four list. The category medians describe other founder-reported cases; they say nothing about what any individual business will reach.

What a founder can take from it

Build the smallest version against a job that repeats. Blend's first version took about a month. What made that cheap version worth shipping was that product photography is not a one-time task for a seller — every new SKU and every listing refresh needs it again.

Treat cost, not quality, as the wedge if that is the real blocker. The founders' stated problem was the price of a shoot. A tool that removes a recurring expense is easier to explain than one that promises better taste.

Make your content do acquisition work. A blog in multiple languages that answers the questions your buyers already search for keeps producing after you stop writing it, and it is the same asset the founders credit for SEO.

Give sharing a concrete reward. Blend's referral program pays out in the product's own currency — 10 watermark-free exports — which costs the company credits rather than cash.

Read comparison numbers as context, not as a target. The category figures above come from founders who chose to be interviewed, so they describe a particular slice of businesses. They are useful for framing where a reported number sits, not for predicting one.
